Metric paper: Base = size A0 = 1 m². Side A * side B. Whereas side B = side A * 2 (root2)
Each fold along the (resulting) shorter side steps "A" up by 1. A4 has been folded 4 times, is approximalety "letter" size, A6 has been folded 6 times, is postcard size. A8 becomes a business card size.
Envelopes are usually size designation "C", depending on number of folds and type of folds the associated number changes. C4/6 has the width of A4 plus extra space and the height of A6 plus extra space, similar shape as an imperial #10 envelope. A "B" envelope will hold an unfolded "C" envelope of same number (B4 holds C4 unfolded), or the respective paper size with a spine, e.g. A4 with spine.
